Kakuzi highlights agribusiness growth and fresh produce expansion in Kenya

Kakuzi Plc is strengthening collaboration with policymakers and public sector entities to drive agricultural economic growth, with a strong focus on fresh produce. During a visit by military officers from the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC), Managing Director Chris Flowers emphasized Kenya’s agribusiness sector as a key economic pillar and a driver of national security. The sector supports economic growth through job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and advancements in skills and technology.

Maj Gen Eric Kinuthia led participants from the Senior Command and Staff No. 40 of the 2024/25 course, including Allied Student Officers and Directing Staff from 16 countries, to Kakuzi’s facilities in Murang’a County. Flowers highlighted the vital role of agriculture, noting that the sector fosters economic and social development. The National Economic Survey 2024 confirms agriculture’s dominance in Kenya’s economy.

Kenya’s fresh produce exports are expanding. Horticultural export earnings grew from $1.12 billion in 2022 to $1.13 billion in 2023, driven by a surge in fruit and vegetable exports. Fruit exports rose by 44.1% to 188.1 thousand tons, while vegetable exports more than doubled to 147.7 thousand tons.

Kakuzi’s fresh produce division saw significant growth, with a 35% increase in half-year turnover to $9.05 million. Avocado revenue surged 42% to $7.32 million, reinforcing Kenya’s position in the global avocado market. Macadamia earnings also rebounded to $246,000, while demand for sustainable wood products contributed to a 54% divisional profit growth, reaching $545,000.

The JCSC, established in 1983, prepares KDF officers and international counterparts for leadership roles. The visit to Kakuzi aimed to provide officers with insights into the strategic role of agribusiness and fresh produce exports in economic stability, national security, and global trade.
